Self-Portrait

Date

October 2022

This piece holds happiness...but it also holds my greatest sorrow in life.
I wasn't planning on turning a simple selfie from the airport into anything particularly special until I was assigned to create a self-portrait. Although its intended purpose was to act as a homework assignment, I wanted it to be more than that. When I finished it, I would show it to my grandma so she could see just how far I'd come with my artistic abilities. I had even told her how close I was to finishing it over fall break, and how excited I was to show it to her since I was proud of how it was turning out. I remember her smiling at me and saying that she "couldn't wait to see it."
Unfortunately, she never got that opportunity. It was the one gift that I could never give to her. But there is a part of me that feels like even though she didn't get to see it physically, she saw it spiritually, and hopefully, she's proud of the artist I have become.

Materials used: Acrylic paint, graphite pencil, ruler, reference picture
